Tuesday Tunes! Rock Mix II! Featuring- The Dead Weather, My Morning Jacket, Live, The Toadies, and More!

Sir Paul, great quote!  I’m certain that this week’s Tuesday Tunes artists all agree with you.

FEATURED ARTISTS AND SONGS

The Dead Weather- “Are Friends Electric”  Sounds like blues great Robert Johnson covering Gary Numan with Janis Joplin on lead vocals.  With the sinister organ playing, the track sounds like The Doors’ Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek are standing in the shadows producing the recording.  

Live- “Waitress”  Live seems to understand what work as a minimum wage waitress is like.  Over the band’s 90’s alterna guitars, lead singer, Ed Kowalczyk,  channels the waitress’ pain. 

My Morning Jacket- “Evil Urges”  This is southern alternative soul from one of The Allman Brothers Band’s many children.  Gorgeous song!  I love the rock boogie riff at the song’s bridge.

The Toadies- “Goolie Get Together”  I find the idea of an alternative rock band from the Deep Ellum art scene of Dallas, Texas covering the theme from a 70’s kid’s cartoon show very appealing.

The emotions on a first listen were also the same as when I learned that the cool song at the end of Apocalypse Now is a Door's song. If you watch Friday Night Lights, this band does the theme song. :) (Nonvocal music.) (*****)

  • The Doors - L.A. Woman

    This CD without the "bonus tracks" is my favorite album of the rock era. Only 27 when the album was released, Jim Morrison, sings with the strength and wisdom of an 87 year old bluesman. The Doors combine gritty blues and jazz to create a proto-punk fury that still resonates today. (*****)
