“Nothing pleases me more than to go into a room and come out with a piece of music.”
Paul McCartney
Sir Paul, great quote! I’m certain that this week’s Tuesday Tunes artists all agree with you.
FEATURED ARTISTS AND SONGS
The Dead Weather- “Are Friends Electric” Sounds like blues great Robert Johnson covering Gary Numan with Janis Joplin on lead vocals. With the sinister organ playing, the track sounds like The Doors’ Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek are standing in the shadows producing the recording.
Live- “Waitress” Live seems to understand what work as a minimum wage waitress is like. Over the band’s 90’s alterna guitars, lead singer, Ed Kowalczyk, channels the waitress’ pain.
My Morning Jacket- “Evil Urges” This is southern alternative soul from one of The Allman Brothers Band’s many children. Gorgeous song! I love the rock boogie riff at the song’s bridge.
The Toadies- “Goolie Get Together” I find the idea of an alternative rock band from the Deep Ellum art scene of Dallas, Texas covering the theme from a 70’s kid’s cartoon show very appealing.

“A work of art is the unique result of a unique temperament.” Oscar Wilde
Oscar Wilde, thanks for the quote posted above! I don’t question that Sea Ray, Buckcherry, The Whigs, and A Place To Bury Strangers have unique temperaments.
FEATURED ARTISTS AND SONGS
Sea Ray- “Nicholas Ray” This song could be a child’s rock n’ roll bedtime music or a child’s bedtime nightmare! Think “Cry Baby Cry” by the Beatles meets Deerhunter lead singer Brad James Cox side project Atlas Sound. (Especially the excellent Atlas Sound song “River Card.”)
The Whigs- “All My Banks” Last I read, The Whigs said they had never listened to The Replacements. No matter, The Whigs play like The Mats proteges, and “All My Banks” carries the melodic punch one would expect from The Whigs unofficial Twin Cities mentors.
A Place To Bury Strangers- “Another Step Away” This band says that they are “the loudest band in New York.” Well, they are loud in the alternative rock sense not the traditional heavy metal sense. This track sounds like Helmet meets The Jesus and Mary Chain meets the Church. (If you don’t get that analogy, then the song just sounds cool and loud!)
Buck Cherry- “Onset” Warning to married men- For better or worse, this song will remind you of your bachelor party! This track is what you would expect from Buck Cherry, and if you enjoy music that sounds like AC/DC meets Guns N’ Roses then you will be glad to get what you expect from the band!

Solitude Days of the New: Days of the New What does this sound like? What would The Doors have sounded like if they had based out of Louisville, Kentucky instead of LA? What if the vocals of The Door's, Jim Morrison, were blended with the vocals of Alice in Chain's, Layne Staley? That's what this sounds like. Days Of The New 1 (Yellow), is my favorite LP of the late 90's.

The Birth And Death Of The Day Explosions in the Sky: All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone When I heard this the first time, I felt the same way that I did when I heard U2's Boy. The emotions on a first listen were also the same as when I learned that the cool song at the end of Apocalypse Now is a Door's song. If you watch Friday Night Lights, this band does the theme song. :) (Nonvocal music.) (*****)
Kashmir Led Zeppelin: Physical Graffiti Insert your favorite rock critic cliche- "This is their Sgt. Pepper." "This their Exile on Main Street." "This is their Nevermind." Yes... this is my favorite Zeppelin album. :) (*****)
L.A. Woman The Doors: L.A. Woman This CD without the "bonus tracks" is my favorite album of the rock era. Only 27 when the album was released, Jim Morrison, sings with the strength and wisdom of an 87 year old bluesman. The Doors combine gritty blues and jazz to create a proto-punk fury that still resonates today. (*****)

Favorite Reads- Summer Edition
John A. Sanford: Dreams: God's Forgotten Language I learned about this book from a minister. Imagine that. :) Very good introduction to dreams from a Jungian psychologist who is also an Episcopal priest. (****)
Malcolm Gladwell: Outliers: The Story of Success What does Gladwell believe leads one to become a master of what one does? Coming from the right environment, and "doing the roadwork." (Working very hard at something you love.)
Excellent, inspiring, book! (*****)
James Hillman: The Soul's Code: In Search of Character and Calling This is one of my favorite books. Hillman believes that when we are born, we are each imprinted with "the seed" of a unique calling. According to Hillman, we ignore our calling at our peril, and I agree with him. (*****)
Seth Godin: Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us I love Seth Godin's books! Like some of the best rock songs, Seth's books are short, catchy, and to the point. Great read on leadership. (*****)
Ray Bradbury: Zen in the Art of Writing: Essays on Creativity In a moment of serendipity, a bookstore employee recommended this book to me. One of the masters, Ray Bradbury, provides inspiration and tools for any writer or anyone who aspires to write. (*****)
